A note about this blog:
Just how *do* you go about getting into the alpaca lifestyle when it seems near impossible due to lack of funds or lack of a farm? How on earth do you learn to care for these tranquil creatures once you get them home? This journal documents how we started from the ground up with next to no funds and no knowledge, and how, with the help of very supportive breeders and friends, it is possible to make a dream come true! Join me on this very honest and personal journey. ~Roo~

As the end of the year approaches

Posted by roo on December 22nd, 2007 — Posted in Farm Entry, Dee Dee, Demi

A few weeks ago, after much frustrating brainstorming since Demi’s birth and coming up emptyhanded, Jason suddenly said ‘Moonwood’, and instantly our farm had a name.

Moonwood will instantly be recognised by the Dungeon and Dragons roleplaying geeks and lovers of Forgotten Realms novels. It is an area of forest that is colonised by wood elves. It embodies exactly what I wanted our name to say: magical, ethereal, radiant. Actually, what I really wanted to name our farm after was what we referred to as the ‘elven circle’ at the property I grew up on in Australia. It was a spot in the woods that was naturally cleared, where the grass never grew long enough to need mowing, and where there was on old fallen over tree to sit on and warm air to feel, even if it was cold.

John and Letti took a trip up to Ohio to collect Dee Dee from Rachel’s farm before the winter weather truly set in. My gosh, with all the winter storms up there recently, they got back JUST in time! Waiting until the weather warms up again would put us too close to Dee Dee’s delivery time and it’s not good for them to travel then. So it was now or never!

And Demi is growing like a weed. She’s eating grass, hay and grain, and is still nursing from Penelope as well. Her official name that will go on her registration papers: MOONWOOD’s Our Demetria.
